COACHING

I am a passionate coach, mentor, advisor, and educator, and would be honored to work with you. I am a residency-trained, ABEM Board-certified emergency physician and former hospital leader. I recently stepped away from my clinical practice yet remain in the academic space, including time spent coaching, mentoring, teaching, writing, and contributing to several national committees. I have deep experience in healthcare technology and AI related to PX, workflow, and CDS. Over the past 3+ decades, I have served as a professional leadership mentor and executive coach for some incredibly talented individuals locally and nationally (including a NASA astronaut, a healthcare tech start-up co-founder, and CMOs, CMIOs, CNOs, and CEOs of various technology healthcare companies). I am honored to have received several national mentoring and teaching awards. I have coached and enjoy working with not only EPs but also physicians from other disciplines, APPs, students, nurses, and healthcare executives. Throughout my career, I have received some incredible coaching and mentoring myself. Like Atul Gawande, MD (see "Personal Best," New Yorker, Sept 2011), I personally understand the tremendous value of targeted, skilled coaching.

I have helped individuals in areas such as career advancement, conflict management, negotiations, career redirection (including preparation for and transition to retirement), as well as with potential opportunities in clinical and non-clinical areas. I've successfully guided individuals to achieve their "personal best," as well as motivated those who need help with personal motivation. My coaching has helped professionals find or identify joy and purpose in their career and in their life. My methods inspire, excite, and stimulate individuals, providing them with necessary information, tools, and skills from which they can benefit in multiple ways. My services are strictly confidential unless otherwise required by law, such as with mandatory reporting.

I am extremely professional, dedicated, knowledgeable, and humble (although it may not seem like it from this brief bio). I have written several textbooks and numerous peer-reviewed articles on topics such as Career Planning, Mentoring, Bedside Teaching and Lecturing, Career Transition, Wellness and Burnout Prevention, and Career Success (in EM and in other specialties). I have been told by friends, colleagues, and people I've coached that I have a kind disposition, listen well, and have a nice sense of humor (used only when appropriate). My current and former roles as Professor of EM, Chairperson of multiple hospital, state, and national committees (including the GME Faculty Development SubCommittee), Co-founder and Co-Director of an EM Residency Program, Medical Student Clerkship Director, Communication Consultant, Consultant for three new EM Residency Programs, and Patient Experience expert have given me tremendous competence and confidence coaching, mentoring, advising, and working with talented individuals. Given my personal history and professional background, I am comfortable working with professionals in any specialty, and of any race, ethnicity, or gender identification. It will be my privilege to support you in your professional and personal growth. I look forward to our scheduled time together.
